Standardization requires maturity

When I read that Valve – the game editor – is trying hard to make the few designers of virtual reality controllers – like Oculus and Sony – use a unique software development kit (SDK), I was feeling really excited.

However, standardization often comes when the products reach a level of maturity that – I think – we’re very far from. Indeed, the only “real” virtual reality headset is the Oculus Crystal Cove, all others only being demonstrated as prototypes.

Many technical sectors have achieved this standardization. After electricity (I wasn’t born!), we’ve seen telephone and other communication standards, electronics standards, and more recently infrastructure virtualization standards (with OpenStack).

But talking about VR, or robotics, I guess we’re not there yet 🙁
